Identification & Biology
Soil fungus (Phymatotrichopsis omnivora) that attacks roots in hot weather. Trees wilt suddenly in summer heat and die within days. One of the most destructive plant diseases in the Southwest.
Current Status
Endemic in alkaline desert soils of AZ, NM, TX.
States affected:
Arizona
Nevada
New Mexico
What Homeowners Should Do
Plant resistant species (most native desert trees are resistant). Amend soil pH where practical. Flutriafol (Topguard) soil drench is the only partially effective treatment.
