Identification & Biology

Spectacular 4-inch beetle with long antennae. Larvae spend 2-3 years feeding on Palo Verde roots underground before emerging as adults in summer monsoon season. Healthy trees can tolerate moderate infestation.

Current Status

Endemic throughout the Sonoran Desert. Part of the natural ecosystem.

States affected:

Arizona Nevada New Mexico

What Homeowners Should Do

Maintain tree vigor through deep irrigation. Heavily infested trees may need removal if structurally compromised. Soil drench insecticide has limited effectiveness since larvae are deep underground.
