Identification & Biology

Beetle native to Arizona/Mexico that has established in Southern California. Larvae bore under bark of oaks, killing branches and eventually the tree. First detected 2004, has killed >80,000 oaks in San Diego.

Current Status

Established in San Diego County. Spreading to Riverside and other counties.

What Homeowners Should Do

Do not transport oak firewood. Monitor oaks for crown thinning and D-shaped exit holes. Report to county agriculture department.
