Erythrina Gall Wasp
Insect Pest
High Threat
Identification & Biology
Tiny wasp from Africa that lays eggs in erythrina leaves, causing severe galling that defoliates and can kill trees. Nearly wiped out native wiliwili trees before biological control wasps were released.
Current Status
Established statewide since 2005. Biological control partially successful.
States affected:
Hawaii
What Homeowners Should Do
Biological control is the primary management. Remove heavily infested non-native coral trees. Support native wiliwili recovery - trees are slowly recovering thanks to biocontrol.
