Identification & Biology
Extended drought weakens tree defenses, allowing native bark beetles to overwhelm and kill them. Dead standing trees are a massive fire and falling hazard. The aftermath of the 2012-2016 drought continues.
Current Status
2012-2016 drought killed over 160 million trees in the Sierra Nevada alone.
States affected:
California
What Homeowners Should Do
Water conifers during drought years. Remove dead/dying conifers near structures. Create defensible space per CAL FIRE guidelines.
