Identification & Biology

Large beetle (1-1.5 inches) with long antennae. Larvae bore deep into heartwood, structurally compromising the tree. Would devastate the Northeast's maple forests if established widely.

Current Status

Eradicated from some areas but still under quarantine in parts of NY, MA, OH. Any sighting triggers federal response.

What Homeowners Should Do

Look for: dime-sized round exit holes in bark, sawdust-like frass at base of tree, unusual branch dieback in maples. IMMEDIATELY report to USDA APHIS if found - this is a federal quarantine pest.
